History

The cottage was originally a herdsman’s cottage on a large estate, which was owned by the Earl of Annesley, and the records go back to 1857. It was lived in by the herdsman Padraig Burke and his sister Mary until the 1920’s, after which it fell into disrepair. By the 1960’s only the original gables were standing upright.
The cottage was refurbished and modernised in 2008, keeping it’s traditional character. It is called Essi's Cottage, in honour of Arsalan ("Essi") Khanmoradi, who came to Ireland from Tehran as a student in the late 1950’s where he met his future wife. During his few years in Ireland he was so touched by the land and its people that until his final passing no matter where in the world he found himself, Essi always reminisced fondly over the happy days he spent as a student in Ireland.
